Native Plant Spotlight | Northern Red Oak

Native to Riverwoods, Northern Red Oak (Quercus rubra) is a medium to large tree with a straight trunk and a large egg-shaped widely spreading crown. It develops fairly quickly and is relatively easy to transplant. Individual trees produce acorns after 25-50 years and can live to be 250-500 years old.

  • Ornamental Value: it is a stately tree, among the largest oak trees and can be cultivated for landscaping. In the fall the deciduous leaves turn dark red or brown and sometimes persist into the winter. The large acorns attract many mammals and some birds.
  • Growing Conditions: full to partial sun in moderately moist well balanced soil is preferred.
  • Mature Size: 60 to 100 feet tall at maturity.

Native Tree & Shrub Planting Cost-Share Program

To help restore the ecological health of our woodlands, residents are encouraged to plant native trees, shrubs, flowers and other plant species.  You might qualify for a Native Tree & Shrub Planting cost-share program, with the Village covering half of the cost of the plants and the planting.

Your property may qualify for one or more of the Village's Cost-Share programs, which can not only help restore the ecological health of Riverwoods, but can also improve your property's ornamental landscape and real estate value. To see which cost-share programs your property qualifies for, request an Ecological Consultation with the Village Ecologist.
