Earth Day | Monday, April 22nd

Happy Earth Day!

Riverwoods was founded on the principles of living in and protecting the natural world and has become a model to other communities. Residents have traditionally celebrated Earth Day by holding a Clean Up Day to pick up trash along the roadways. Started by a 7th grade boy scout, Jack McArdle, Jr. on April 25, 1970, it grew into an annual event.

The first Earth Day was held on April 22, 1970 to bring awareness to environmental problems. Today Earth Day has evolved to not only bring awareness, but also action as well as to appreciate the beauty of nature.

This year celebrate Earth Day by:

  • Engaging in your own Clean Up Day in your neighborhood to help keep Riverwoods a very special and unique community
  • Supporting pollinators by planting pollinator-friendly plants
  • Using wildflowers and native plants in your garden
  • Not using chemicals in your garden
  • Going to a park and spending time outside
  • Reducing, reusing, and recycling
  • Conserving water
  • Thinking about your diet: buy more seasonal foods, eat more plants, etc.
  • Getting kids involved and passing down the love of nature
