Mark Your Calendars! Riverwoods’ Clothing and Textile Recycling Drive June 1-30

May/June 2014

By Louise Simonson

The Riverwoods Preservation Council (RPC) is working with the Village of Riverwoods to sponsor a clothing and textile drive June 1-30 with convenient drop off at the Village Hall 24/7.

Do you have clothing or linens you were going to throw out? You are not alone. Even though there are many organizations collecting clothing such as Good Will, it is estimated that nearly 85% of all clothing and textiles end up in landfills. In fact, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) estimates that the average American throws away 70 pounds of clothing/ textiles each year! Another way of viewing the problem is that 5-10% of all waste sent to municipal landfills is comprised of textiles, which are often very dense and consume significant space.

The Solid Waste Agency of Lake County (SWALCO) is implementing a new community-wide program where clothing and textiles can be collected for recycling and kept out of landfills. What is unique about this program is that all gradations of clothing and textiles ranging from new or gently used to unwanted/worn can be donated. Although the aim is to primarily collect gently used items, clothes or textiles with stains or holes will be accepted as well. The great news is that almost 95% of the materials collected will be repurposed or recycled.

Reducing textile and clothing waste is a significant challenge. Rather than contributing to the problem here is your opportunity to be part of a positive solution.
