Electricity Aggregation Has Arrived in Riverwoods!

by Rick Jamerson and Cheryl Chamberlain,
Village of Riverwoods Trustees

On March 20, 2012, the Village of Riverwoods voters approved a referendum allowing the Village to enter into an electricity purchasing agreement for its residential and small business customers. The Village received bids from nine energy suppliers and, after comparing the various companies, terms, and prices, the Board of Trustees selected mc squared (mc2) as the Village's energy supplier. The Board of Trustees chose to lock in the electricity rate for three years as opposed to other municipalities that chose one or two year rate locks. The contract also requires the mc2 rate to be at or below the ComEd rate during the entire term of the contract. The contracted mc2 rate is 4.812 cents per kWh. For an additional 0.075 cents per kWh, residents can chose the 100% Green Power Program. The average resident will save $58 per month under the new rates. Your savings will vary depending on your power usage and your current energy supplier.

Residents Currently Supplied by ComEd

Residents who are currently supplied electric energy from ComEd do not have to do anything to receive the new mc2 rate. There is no cost to join the mc2 program. All current ComEd residents have already received a mailing on Village of Riverwoods stationery with an "Opt-Out" postcard. This postcard should only be mailed back if the resident does not want to join the mc2 program. If you received this Opt-Out letter and did not mail the postcard back, you will receive a second Opt-Out letter from ComEd after the beginning of August. Once again, you need do nothing to stay in the mc2 program. You will see the new rates reflected on your August billing. If you want to enroll in the 100% Green Power Program, you will need to go the mc2 website. The website is www.RiverwoodsElectricityAggregation.com and you click on "Pricing". There you will see the 100% Green Power Program total rate of 4.887 cents per kWh and a green "Click Here" button to enroll. Enrollment is an easy three step process.

Residents Currently Supplied by ComEd on an "Hourly Billing" Basis

There are a few Riverwoods residents on a special hourly billing plan through ComEd. These residents did not receive an Opt-Out letter and they may or may not benefit from the mc2 rate. Also, there is a minimum term of one year for this rate. You will need to check when you began hourly billing and, if it has been more than a year, you will need to compare your total energy costs to what your total cost would be using the mc2 rate. If you have questions, you can send them via e-mail to Riverwoods@mc2energyservices.com. Questions will be answered within 24 hours during the week. If you determine you will save money with the mc2 rate, you may Opt-In to the program by calling 888-537-8418. You will need your ComEd account number from your bill. This process takes 15 minutes to complete. Once you have enrolled, you can enroll in the 100% Green Power Program by going to the mc2 website. The website is www.RiverwoodsElectricityAggregation.com and you will click on "Pricing". There you will see the 100% Green Power Program total rate of 4.887 cents per kWh and a green "Click Here" button to enroll. Enrollment is an easy three-step process.

Residents Currently Supplied by ComEd with the Electric Heat Rate

Residents that have electric heat typically have a ComEd energy rate that is lower than the standard ComEd energy rate. These residents received a mailing on Village of Riverwoods stationery with an "Opt-Out" postcard. The website is www.RiverwoodsElectricityAggregation.com and you will click on "Pricing" There you will see the 100% Green Power Program total rate of 4.887 cents per kWh and a green "Click Here" button to enroll. Enrollment is an easy three-step process.

Residents Currently Supplied by an Alternative Energy Supplier

Residents that are currently buying electricity from a supplier other than ComEd will need to Opt-In to the mc2 program, meaning you will need to take action to participate. These residents received a letter on Village of Riverwoods stationery explaining this process. You may have a cancellation fee in your contract with your current supplier. You will need to determine if canceling your contract and joining the mc2 program will be beneficial to you. If you decide to join the program, you will have to call 888-537-8418. You will need your ComEd account number from your bill. This process takes 15 minutes to complete. Once you have enrolled, you can enroll in the 100% Green Power Program by going to the mc2 website. The website is www.RiverwoodsElectricityAggregation.com and you will click on "Pricing". There you will see the 100% Green Power Program rate of 4.887 cents per kWh and a green "Click Here" button to enroll. Enrollment is an easy three-step process. If you have a cancellation penalty and decide to wait until your current contract is complete, you can join the mc2 program at that time by following the above process.

If You Opt-Out Now But Want to Join Later

If you decide to Opt-Out at this time, but decide to join the mc2 program at a later date, you can do so by calling 888-537-8418 and proceeding through the Opt-In process.

If You Decide to Purchase Energy from Another Supplier Later

Once you have joined the mc2 program, you will be subject to a $25 cancellation fee if you leave the program before August 2015. This fee will not apply if you move out of Riverwoods or if you move within Riverwoods and maintain mc2 as your energy supplier at your new residence.
